Athletic/Sports Trainer

Athletic/Sports Trainer Athletic trainers work with athletic programs. They help to manage, prevent, treat and rehabilitate athletic injuries as directed by the team's physicians. Athletic trainers help athletes perform to the best of their ability while minimizing injury through their knowledge of nutrition, hygiene, physiology, psychology, biomechanics, anatomy, conditioning and protective equipment.

Specializations
Work Environment Athletic trainers may be employed by middle schools or high schools, colleges, universities, professional athletic organizations or sports medicine clinics in hospitals, health clubs or corporate health programs.
High School Prep General college preparation is recommended: three courses in math including algebra I, algebra II and geometry, or a higher level math course for which algebra II is a prerequisite; three science courses including biology and chemistry, one physical science and one lab course; four English units and two social studies units, including one in U.S. History; and two years of a second language. Courses or experience in first aid and health are helpful.
Academic Requirements A minimum of a baccalaureate degree is required, which must include at least 800 working hours of clinical experience, with two or more years under the direct supervision of a Certified Athletic Trainer. One can also be eligible for certification by internship, requiring 1500 hours of athletic training experience under the direct supervision of an National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) Certified Athletic Trainer. These hours must be attained over a minimum period of two years. Athletic Trainers can be certified by the NATA after successfully completing a certification exam.
