Health Information Technician

Health Information Technician Health Information Technicians are certified as RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician) and often work as assistants to the medical record administrator who is certified as a Registered Health Information Administrator. They carry out many technical duties in the management of patient records. Duties include collecting, analyzing and interpretation of health data. They may manage health documents/databases and protect confidentiality of the data. In a small institution, the medical record technician may have full responsibility for the operation of the department, including compiling information, preparing technical reports and other information. In larger facilities, the technician may specialize in a particular area of the medical record department.

Significant Points Health information technicians are projected to be one of the 20 fastest growing occupations. Employment of medical records and health information technicians is expected to increase by 18 percent through 2016—faster than the average for all occupations—because of rapid growth in the number of medical tests, treatments, and procedures that will be increasingly scrutinized by health insurance companies, regulators, courts, and consumers.
Specializations
Work Environment Medical record technicians work in hospitals, clinics, medical practices, state and local health departments, insurance companies, and long-term care facilities. They usually work a 40-hour week, with some overtime required. In hospitals where health information departments are open 18-24 hours, 7 days a week, they may work shifts.
High School Prep A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Courses focusing in anatomy/physiology, typing, computer and office administration are helpful.
Academic Requirements Most health information technicians complete a two year program offering an associates of science degree from a community college. Courses include medical terminology, medical record science, transcription and coding. Programs must be accredited by the American Medical Association in conjunction with the American Health Information Management Association. Upon successful completion of the program, the graduate is eligible to write the national certification examination and upon successful passing of this examination, receive the RHIT (Registered Health Information Technician) credentials. Certificates will prepare the student to develop their technical skills for entry level positions in the Health Information Management coding field. Graduates of this certificate can sit for the CCA (Certified Coding Associate) exam. Passing of this exam will provide the entry-level coding credential. It is recommended that the student work in the field to gain experience prior to taking the CCS exam.
